The Best-Kept Exfoliation Secret at SkinSpirit: Dermaplaning

During my recent facial at the SkinSpirit Palo Alto location, my esthetician, Laura introduced me to SkinSpirit’s best-kept exfoliation secret: Dermaplaning.

What is dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a physical exfoliation that uses a gentle blade that looks sort of like a butter knife to remove dead skin cells and vellus (the short, fine, light-colored facial) hair from the epidermis, which is the top layer of the skin. I was really excited to finally get to experience Dermaplaning for the first time, especially since all of my co-workers had been buzzing around the office about how amazing this type of exfoliation was.

When I asked Laura what Dermaplaning was and what I could expect, she walked me through the whole process during this portion of my treatment.

First, she explained how it will help my skincare products to work even better and more cost-effectively. By removing dead skin cells and vellus hair from the top layer of the skin, the clear path then allows skincare products be absorbed into the skin even further, making them much more effective. She said that after my treatment, I wouldn't need to use as much product for them to be as effective either. She even said that Dermaplaning is also a great way to prep the skin for more advanced treatments such as a chemical peel or IPL.

Secondly, for anyone who typically has those annoying vellus, facial hairs waxed every 4 to 6 weeks, they wouldn't need to anymore with a Dermaplaning Facial at SkinSpirit. Dermaplaning removes vellus hair from the top layer of the skin gently without the pain or irritation of waxing.

Another benefit to Dermaplaning is that it’s a gentle and safe type of exfoliation. Dermaplaning doesn’t hurt, there’s no downtime and there are no side effects. Dermaplaning is even gentle enough for clients who use Retin-A or are on Accutane because it doesn’t require the use of chemicals.

My favorite benefit to Dermaplaning was when Laura told me that this type of exfoliation would leave my skin looking like an airbrushed version of myself. My skin would be soft, smooth and bright long after my treatment. This benefit was enough to sell me on the treatment alone.

After the Dermaplaning portion of my facial, Laura applied a slightly “spicy” mask. I was so completely distracted from the tingles on my skin by her heavenly head, neck and shoulder massage that she nearly put me to sleep. After my treatment, Laura sent me home with a sample of SkinCeuticals Gentle Cleanser, SkinCeuticals Phyto+ and SkinCeuticals Epidermal Repair. She explained that these three products would help prevent my newly exfoliated and smooth skin from developing any possible irritation after my treatment.

Laura was right! I had never seen my skin so smooth and bright after just one facial. My skin was so incredibly soft that I couldn’t stop touching it for a couple weeks after my Dermaplaning Facial. All of my skincare products and makeup seemed to easily glide onto my skin as I applied them. And I absolutely loved all of the compliments I received from friends and co-workers about my glowing skin. I had no problems sharing with them mine and SkinSpirit’s best-kept exfoliation secret: Dermaplaning!
