Lip Care 101: Expert Tips for Hydration & Health

Our Tips for Healthy, Hydrated Lips

When it comes to keeping your lips healthy and hydrated, our experts had a few things to say:

Avoid licking, biting or picking your lips.

This can dry them out and lead to chapped lips.

Keep your lips protected from sun and wind.

To keep your lips protected when in the elements, make sure you use an SPF. That’s right, your lips need sun (and wind) protection too! While they may not appear to burn or tan, Karen Fernandez, Head of Aesthetics, reminds us that UV rays can damage the skin of the lips, as it can all skin.

Stay hydrated, inside and out.

Shawna Jones, PA-C, reminds us to drink water throughout the day to stay hydrated from the inside out.

Then, keep your lips hydrated from the outside in by going to sleep each night with hydrated lips; Skinceuticals Antioxidant Lip Repair is a great daily solution.

During the day, we love SkinMedica’s Smooth & Plump Lip System duo for gentle exfoliation + super hydration. Using the award-winning HA5 hydration system, this is a must for anyone who invests in lip filler. Plus, it adds a touch of gloss to the lips - you will love the way they look!

“Apply non-irritating lip balm several times throughout the day,” advises Shawna.

But, make sure to look at your ingredients! Avoid products containing camphor eucalyptus, mint, cinnamon, peppermint, fragrance, menthol, lanolin and oxybenzone. Great-tasting lip balms can also lead you to lick your lips, which in turn dries them out.

That doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t use over-the-counter lip balms. “My secret favorite cure for chapped lips is actually Aquaphor,” says Karen.

With any of the products you’re using, just beware of overloading the lips as this can lead to congestion along the lip line.

Exfoliate!

“Exfoliation of the lips is essential,” says Karen. This can help prevent black heads or the congestion we mentioned above, and will keep your lips hydrated. Just be gentle and make sure you’re okay with the taste!

Karen recommends Jan Marini’s SkinZyme for hydrating all of the skin of the face, including the lips, while melting away dead skin. A light scrub would also work great; we love SkinMedica’s AHA/BHA Exfoliating Cleanser for the beauty pro!

Insider Tip: Book one of our clinical signature treatments to have your lips gently exfoliated with DiamondGlow or microdermabrasion.

Combat the dry winter air by using a humidifier at home, suggests Shawna.

Cold, winter air can dry out your lips and skin, but a humidifier will add moisture to the air in your home and help with hydration.
