KYBELLA® vs. CoolSculpting® for Double Chin: What You Need to Know

Debating between KYBELLA® and CoolSculpting® to reduce fat under the chin? While these procedures are different, both can be effective in targeting fat beneath the chin. Getting a better understanding of these treatments, as well as scheduling a professional consultation with our medical experts, will help you decide which of the two will work better for you.

What Is KYBELLA?

KYBELLA is a minimally invasive, FDA-approved procedure that addresses moderate-to-severe submental fullness. This submental fullness is commonly referred to as a double chin. KYBELLA is an injectable formula that reduces fat cells beneath your chin by destroying fat pockets and contouring your lower jawline and face.

Once the fat is removed, your skin will follow the new contour of the neck and chin, resulting in a naturally elegant and contoured appearance. The key ingredient in KYBELLA is deoxycholic acid, naturally found in your digestive system.

KYBELLA permanently dissolves the fat in the region you are targeting (in this case, under the chin). The solution enables your body to naturally excrete the cells and improve your profile, often as soon as within four weeks. You’ll get liposuction results without the downtime and pain—win-win.

Benefits of KYBELLA

KYBELLA is an effective treatment that delivers various benefits:

  • Minimally invasive: KYBELLA involves injecting a fat-dissolving solution into your chin. This noninvasive procedure gives you optimal results, with minimal risk and discomfort.
  • Customizable: Our expert providers will tailor your treatment plan to meet your precise needs, giving the best results for your chin.
  • Short downtime: Some clients do experience significant swelling after the procedure; however, this should resolve within days. Aside from that, there is typically minimal downtime.
  • FDA-approved: KYBELLA is FDA-approved when performed by a trained health care professional. Our certified experts are more than qualified to perform the treatment.
  • Long-lasting results: Results can be long-term, giving you a sculpted jawline and defined chin for years to come.

Good to Know Before You Go

The number of treatments needed can vary. SkinSpirit KYBELLA experts find that most clients require two sessions. Each session is scheduled one month apart, and the number of injections you receive is based on the results you're looking for. With KYBELLA, the entire chin fat removal process can take as little as 15 minutes.

Your SkinSpirit professional provider will numb the area under your chin for comfort during the procedure. Afterward, you may experience some swelling for up to three days. You shouldn’t experience any pain. If you do have some discomfort, you can take Ibuprofen.

What Is CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting is a noninvasive body contouring technique and fat-reduction procedure. CoolSculpting works by eliminating the fat cells via cold suction. It is the go-to treatment for stubborn pockets of fat that refuse to disappear even after dieting and committing to an intense workout routine. CoolSculpting contours many areas of the body—all without requiring surgical intervention—and is often used as a chin fat removal technique for those clients with more fullness below the chin.

The CoolSculpting Mini—designed specifically to reduce a double chin and contour the lower face—is very effective. You may notice a 20% improvement after your first session, with the best results typically visible two to three months after treatment.  Generally speaking, a second (and possibly third) session four to six weeks after your first treatment is recommended.

Benefits of CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting’s fat-freezing technology or cryolipolysis, delivers various benefits:

  • Noninvasive treatment: CoolSculpting requires zero surgery or needles, making it a noninvasive and simple way to treat submental fullness.
  • Targeted fat reduction: CoolSculpting technology allows specific and specialized fat targeting in various parts of your body.
  • Minimal downtime: You can typically resume everyday activities immediately after treatment.
  • Natural-looking results: CoolSculpting becomes visible within months.  It’s a more gradual contouring treatment that typically looks more natural than liposuction.

Good to Know Before You Go

Our clients tend to find that, while cold, CoolSculpting for double chin reduction is very tolerable. A gel pad is applied to the area under the chin and then, a small or mini applicator is applied to the area. You will feel suction and then cold. There may be some initial pinching of the skin that will eventually become numb due to the cooling action.

You may listen to music or read during the approximately 45-minute treatment (per applicator). The area may be swollen during the procedure. Afterward, you are good to go and can resume all your normal daily activities, including your exercise routine. CoolSculpting is a custom treatment, and the exact treatment time can vary based on the treatment area.

Deciding on CoolSculpting vs. KYBELLA for Your Chin

Keep in mind that not everyone is a candidate for CoolSculpting or KYBELLA. During your complimentary consultation, our experts can assess your goals to help you determine whether you are a good fit for either procedure. In general, CoolSculpting is better for “bulk” reduction—reducing visible, stubborn fat bulges—while KYBELLA is more easily applied to specific parts of the chin and jawline, and can target smaller areas of fat.

Both procedures have minimal downtime and are considered safe and effective in reducing fat pockets in regions like the chin, jawline, and lower face.
