5 Surprising Uses for Botox

A favorite of medical spa patients all over the world, BOTOX has become synonymous with smoother skin.

But did you know that Botox can be used for more than wrinkle reduction? As the #1 provider of Botox in the country, we help patients treat concerns from wrinkles and fine lines to hyperhidrosis, jaw pain, and more.

What is Botox used for? SkinSpirit injectors share some of their favorite uses

We spoke to several of our expert injectors to get the skinny on all things injectables - and in the process learned five surprising uses for Botox.

1. It can help relax the neck muscles for a smoother, tighter appearance in the neck and jawline.

“My savvy millennials know Botox is the gold standard for wrinkle prevention,” says Samsara Sterling, Aesthetic Nurse Specialist at Palo Alto and Oakland - Montclair. “However, they are always surprised to learn that it can be used to treat the neck, relaxing the muscles that pull down on the jawline and resulting in a smoother and tighter appearance of the jaw and neck.”

2. It can help treat Hyperhidrosis, or excess sweating.

Hyperhidrosis is an abnormal sweating condition, not induced by exercise or heat, that can impact the hands, underarms, feet and face. Although sweating is the body's natural way of cooling itself, sometimes due to dysregulation in the nervous system, the sweat glands can become overstimulated, causing excessive sweating - or hyperhidrosis. This type of excessive sweating occurs on both sides of the body and can be very disruptive both emotionally and socially.

Prescription antiperspirants are often prescribed as the first line of therapy, but they can cause irritation and are often not effective. That’s where Botox comes in.

“Treatment with Botulinum toxin injections such as Botox, can temporarily yet effectively block the nerves that cause excessive sweating,” says Hannah Zare, Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner in Palo Alto.

3. It can reduce the appearance of a “gummy smile”.

A “gummy smile” is often caused by an overactive LLSAN muscle, a muscle responsible for the elevation of the top lip. “Botox can be used to reduce how high the upper lip elevates when you smile, decreasing the appearance of the gums,” says Monica Monahan, Aesthetic Nurse Specialist at University Village (Seattle). “This muscle must be treated carefully and precisely. It is a balance between lowering the top lip when smiling, but also retaining natural movement when speaking and animating.”

4. It can be used to treat the masseters, slimming the face and reducing headaches or jaw pain.

“Did you know Botox can slim your lower face by treating the masseter muscle?” asks Lindsay Breinholt, Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner in Salt Lake City. “This is the strongest muscle in the body and it can be overactive with clenching and grinding. If you suffer from headaches, jaw pain or desire a slimmer lower face, you may be a candidate.”

5. It can reduce tension in the neck and trapezius muscles and improve posture.

#TrapTox is trending all over Instagram and for good reason. "By getting those little injections in your traps, you give them a chance to relax and loosen up," says Aesthetic Injector Courtney Newlin in Walnut Creek. "This means less pain, more comfort and a beautiful lengthening of your neck. Not only that, but relaxed trap muscles improve your range of motion and flexibility.. So whether you're into sports or dancing, smoother movements await you!"
