With laser hair removal being so popular, clients typically have a lot of questions about the service. One question we get asked all the time is,
“How long do results last from laser hair removal treatments?’
Answer: The hair on our body grows in three stages: Anagen (hair growth), Catagen (hair death) and Telogen (rest.) The Anagen stage lasts about 6 weeks. Laser hair removal is most effective during the early part of this stage because this is when hair is actively growing. The Catagen stage is when the hair essentially “dies.” During this stage, the hair follicle shrinks and detaches from the dermal papilla (the base of the follicle.) The Telogen stage is when older hairs are resting while new hairs begin the growth stage (Anagen.) Hairs in the Telogen stage can last up to six months.
Usually only about 30 percent of our follicles have hair coming to the surface of the skin at a time. The rest of the follicles are in hibernation until a new growth cycle begins. One laser hair removal treatment is never enough because most of the hair will be in the Telogen stage and “resting” making them immune to the laser rays. You’ll need to schedule a series of consecutive treatments, usually every 4 to 6 weeks to see significant results.
After receiving a series of laser hair removal treatments, most clients report a significant reduction in the amount of body hair that grows back. The hair that does grow back tends to be sparse, fine and lighter in color. With laser hair removal treatments, you’re reducing the amount of shaving required in the future, while reducing the quantity and thickness of the hair that grows back. Once a client has finished a complete series of laser hair removal treatments, they typically need one or two maintenance sessions each year to maintain results.
