Summers are meant for enjoying the outdoors - days at the beach, kayaking, hiking, traveling, and more. Unfortunately, spending all that time in the sun also puts you at risk for sun damage, the effects of which can just become more pronounced as you age.
At SkinSpirit, we want to help you start fall fresh with healthy, glowing skin, and we’ve got some great tips we think will help.
Let’s start by looking at some of the issues we can help to address.
Signs of Sun Damage
Signs of sun damage can be instant and obvious or more subtle and reveal themselves overtime - causing your skin to age prematurely and potentially leading to health conditions. Some of the most common signs of sun damage include:
- Dry skin
- Sun spots or age spots
Long term, frequent exposure to ultraviolet or UV rays can even lead to much larger complications, like skin cancer.
Sun Damage Prevention
Of course, the best way to treat sun damage is to stop it before it ever starts. Prevent sun damage by avoiding overexposure to the skin and wearing the right sunscreen for your skin type, every day - but especially when you’re spending time outside. We have some tips to help you find the best sunscreen for you in our SPF guide here.
We also recommend incorporating antioxidants into your at-home skin care routine. Antioxidants protect and repair cells in the body from damage caused by free radicals - which often lead to wrinkles and other age-related skin concerns - and they protect the skin against environmental aggressors like UV rays.
Skin Recovery Treatments to Combat Sun Damage
Some of our favorite rejuvenating skin recovery treatments this fall include:
Chemical peels work from the inside out to remove dead cells on the surface of the skin, revealing the smoother, healthier skin beneath. They help reduce sun damage with low risk, can be customized, have minimal downtime and yield maximum results in a short amount of time. Chemical peels can also help with wrinkles and breakouts.
Our IPL and BBL photofacials use a non-laser, precision light generator to minimize skin discolorations associated with accumulated sun damage and age spots on the face and/or chest. Photofacials can also help reduce the look of vascular problems, such as rosacea, while leaving the surface of the skin unharmed.
Generally this works best on those who are fair skinned, but we are happy to assess your skin type and let you know if you’re a good candidate.
Laser resurfacing is a great way to recover from summer sun damage, treating sun spots and discoloration. It penetrates deep into the skin, breaking down uneven pigmentation and redness and stimulating the production of collagen to give the skin a more youthful appearance.
