Pre treatment instructions

To maximize the desired outcome of the chemical peel, SkinSpirit recommends you follow these pre-treatment instructions prior to your scheduled treatment:

Your Home Care Regimen:

  1. If you are using a retinoid product, please STOP use 5 days prior to the chemical peel.
  2. Use a physical sunscreen with at least an SPF 30+ every day rain or shine for at least three weeks prior to the chemical peel.
  3. STOP the use of any glycolic, alpha hydroxy acid or any other product that can cause dryness, redness, or irritation 3 days prior to the chemical peel.
  4. If you are prone to one or more cold sores per year, we will dispense an antiviral medication (valcyclovir) on the day of treatment.
  5. A melanin-suppressing agent may be recommended depending on your skin type. You must follow the appropriate instructions on use of this product. Please note that some skin types might require 4-6 weeks use of a melanin suppressor to insure a safe and effective peel process.

In addition, please refrain from the following:

  • No waxing of the area to be treated 1 week prior to chemical peel.
  • No filler in the area to be treated 1 week prior to chemical peel.
  • No IPL or Laser Hair Removal in the area to be treated 2 weeks prior to chemical peel.

post treatment instructions

The treatment performed may cause increased sensitivity to the skin depending on the skin type and home care regimen. Side effects may include, but are not limited to stinging, itching, irritation, redness, swelling, tightness, peeling and scabbing.

Until the skin is completely healed, avoid sweating, exercising, hot baths or showers, scrubbing, picking or rubbing, which could lead to scarring.

Day 1:

  • Your face will feel warm and flushed like a mild sunburn. Takecare to stay out of the sun.

Day 2:

  • Skin will feel tight and dry. Wash your skin gently with a mild cleanser. Moisturize as needed, and use a Physical SPF 30+.

Days 3-7:

  • Skin may begin to crack and peel and continue to peel for about 3-5 days.
  • Pigmented areas may appear darker during this time. Gently wash face with a mild cleanser morning and evening. Limit moisturizer as it will slow down the peeling process. Do not pick or peel these areas as complications may occur.

For best results, use only products advised by your practitioner, including sunscreen. Your home care products have been recommended to maximize your results so follow instructions carefully. If you need help with any home care, please call the clinic for support. Avoid sun exposure.
